Regular Group Classes

Overview

Starting on October 23, 2017, all of our regular group classes are held on Monday nights and are followed by a one-hour social dance. We start with the Applications class at 6:30, followed by the Repertoire class at 7:20, and the Foundations class at 8:10. The dance runs from 9:10 to 10:30 and is open to everyone! The cost is included for all those registered in classes, who we encourage to stay and practice. For those not registered in classes, we ask for a small contribution to help cover costs (we suggest $5 or pay what you can).

We encourage rotation of partners during our group classes. This quickens and enhances your learning as you adjust and adapt to other dancers at various levels and promotes the social aspect of the dance.

Progression

Learning West Coast Swing is a journey that you can travel as far as you wish, always with new skills to learn ahead if you choose. This keeps the dance fresh and exciting while also allowing you to enjoy the dance at whatever level you have reached.

Here, at West Coast Swing London, the journey starts with the Foundations series, where you learn and refine the basic moves that underpin all of the later, more complex patterns. From there, you join the Repertoire class, which will have content that changes each time it is offered so that you can continue to take these classes and will always have something new to learn. Once you are comfortable with learning the material in the Repertoire classes, the Applications class will help you apply the patterns to the music (and even dance a little without a pattern!). We encourage those taking the Applications class to also take the Repertoire class in order to continue to build the skills that you will use in the Applications class.

If you have taken the Foundations (or Level 1) class before and would like to solidify your skills, take it again! You can also repeat Foundations to learn the opposite role – learn to lead if you are a follow or learn to follow if you are a lead! This will deepen your understanding of connection and of the dance from the perspective of the other role, and will improve your skills in your usual role.

Applications

In each six-week session, this class will focus on applying the pattern variations learned in the Repertoire class to a specific song. Students will learn a choreography in order to gain a greater understanding of musicality and how patterns can be put together and used in their social dancing and adapted to different kinds of music. This class will help students add a focus on musicality to their west coast swing toolkits, gain confidence in applying their knowledge of patterns to the social dance floor, and hone their technical skills through the mastery of a routine.  This class may be taken in combination with the Repertoire class. No partner is needed.
